Toyota debuts new TRD-designed lift kit for 2020-21 Tacoma

Like we always say: the only thing better than a Toyota Tacoma 4×4 is a Tacoma that has been modified to fit the owner’s tastes, personality and the way they use their Tacoma at work or play. Now, Toyota’s performance division is making throwing some bigger meats on your Tacoma easier and safer than ever, with the announcement of a new, TRD-designed lift kit for the 2020-21 Tacoma.

Now available nationwide through Toyota dealerships as a dealer-installed option, the kit — which provides a 2-inch front lift and 1-inch rear lift on any 2020-21 V6 4×4 Tacoma — was created in-house by Toyota engineers. It’s the only Tacoma lift kit that’s validated to be completely compatible with Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), the suite of advanced safety features that comes standard on every Tacoma.

The core of the kit are special Bilstein monotube shocks developed in cooperation with Toyota. Fitted with red dust boots with “Tuned by TRD” graphics, the shocks provide additional lift thanks to the adjustment of the coil spring position on the shock tube. In addition, the shocks also improve off-road handling and performance, with an extended rebound stroke to allow for more suspension travel.

In addition, the larger shock body contains additional volume for oil, helping improve damping response and dissipate extreme heat caused by off-roading. The rear shock bodies feature larger pistons compared to the stock units, with a hardened piston rod that’s 4 millimeters larger than stock for increase flex and bending resistance. Cast-iron spacers are included to achieve the 1-inch rear lift. With the kit installed, frame ground clearance is improved by 1.7 inches, while the approach, breakover and departure angles are all also improved.

As if that all that great hardware under the skin wasn’t enough, the kit also includes a TRD Pro-style front grille, with heritage-inspired TOYOTA lettering. The grille kit also includes all the sensors, wiring and camera support brackets needed to adjust your Tacoma’s advanced safety systems to the increased ride height, so as to retain the functionality of the TSS system once the kit is installed. This is the only lift kit validated to be completely TSS-compatible. Also included are black bezels that fill in the deleted fog lamp pockets.

The Tacoma TRD Lift Kit has a retail price of $1,350, not include an estimated 4-5 hours of labor to install it, and is only offered as a dealership-installed option. It fits all 2020-2021 V6-powered 4×4 models, except for Double Cab Long Bed Tacomas and TRD Pro models. Once installed, it’s backed by the same warranty as all TRD accessories: 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on parts if it is installed prior to or at the time of the sale, or a 1-year/12,000-mile warranty on parts if installed afterward.
