The most significant update you will notice and feel on the refreshed 2023 Toyota Highlander is the brand-new 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. This is a helpful change because drivers will notice higher torque and higher efficiency than the previous engine. This new turbocharged four-cylinder delivers 265 horsepower and 309 lb.-ft. of torque. This is a significant 17 percent increase over the previous 3.5-liter V6 engine’s 263 lb.-ft. Drivers will feel this gain in everyday driving situations, especially when taking advantage of the Highlander’s eight-passenger seating and generous cargo capacity.Â
When making the decision to switch engines, fuel economy was extremely important. Fuel economy is 24 miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving. This new engine is also more environmentally friendly, with more than a 50 percent reduction in NOx and NMOG as well as an improvement in CO2 emissions compared to the outgoing V6 engine. The best news? This new turbocharged torque monster is standard across all grades of the 2023 Highlander. The Highlander Hybrid powertrain remains unchanged going into the 2023 model year.
Each new 2023 Toyota Highlander is equipped to tow up to 5,000 pounds with the help of the included Trailer Sway Control which utilizes the Vehicle Stability Control system to help control unwanted trailer movement. To further aid in efficiency, the Highlander is equipped with a standard start/stop system that shuts the engine off when you come to a stop and instantly restarts when you lift your foot from the brake pedal.
The 2023 Toyota Highlander also offers interior upgrades. On Limited and Platinum models, you’ll find dual 12.3-inch digital display screens. The digital gauge cluster features four different visual modes for a personalized touch: Casual, Smart, Tough, and Sporty mode. The 12.3-inch center touch screen will also be optional for the XLE and sporty XSE grades, which have an eight-inch screen as standard. If you choose a Highlander equipped with the wireless charger option, the location of the charging pad has moved to the shelf right under the center touchscreen for easy device access. The XLE and XSE grades join the Limited and Platinum in featuring the convenience of a hands-free power liftgate. A kick of a foot under the bumper opens or closes the liftgate which is great at the grocery store or when you’re carrying the kiddos and don’t have a free hand to use the provided button. The exterior now features the gorgeous Cypress Green color as an option – and you should definitely choose it.Â
