10 Fun Facts about the Month of July
For all of us Americans, we know the month of July is all about the Fourth of July, cookouts, family camping trips, and laid-back, lazy days at the lake. Besides the July 4th holiday and the month is one of the hottest out of the year, there are other interesting facts about July. We at Landers Toyota in Little Rock want to share these fun facts about the sixth month.
July was named after the famous Roman general Julius Caesar by the Roman senate as it was the month he was born in. Julius Caesar was a successful military general and statesman who changed the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. Most of us, though, know him as the guy who got literally stabbed in the back by his best friend because the Shakespearean play is required reading in school. The month was previously called Quintilis (Latin for fifth) as it was the fifth month of the 10-month-long ancient Roman calendar.
Historically, this time of year was observed within Ancient Roman and Greek astrology as connected with bad luck, mad-dog attacks, unexpected thunderstorms, heat, and drought. Hence the phrase “dog days of summer.” It’s also connected with the star Sirius, which is part of the Canis Major (Greater Dog) star system.
July 3, 1886: There’s some controversy surrounding the fact that Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz, who never met personally, simultaneously developed the world’s first automobiles in Mannheim (Benz) and Stuttgart (Daimler), Germany in the year 1886.
July 23, 1903: Ford, with 12 investors and 1,000 shares, had spent almost all of its $28,000 cash investment by the time it sold its first Model A on this date.
July 25, 1909: Louis Bleriot was the first man to fly an aircraft from one country to another successfully. He took off from the coast of France and landed across the English Channel near Dover, England.
July 11, 1916: President Woodrow Wilson loved to “motor.” According to the Federal Highway Administration, President Wilson mapped out a series of routes – known as the Number One Ride, the Southern Maryland Ride, and the Potomac Ride – that he and the first lady enjoyed. On this date, the president signed the Federal Aid Road Act, a federal-aid highway program to fund the improvement of the nation’s roads.
July 16, 1935: Oklahoma City introduces the first parking meter to its city thoroughfares.
July 5, 1946: The world’s first bikini was unveiled in the famous Piscine Molitor swimming pool in Paris modeled by showgirl Micheline Bernardini.
July is also the month of incredible feats in space. The first U.S. crewed mission to the moon was the Apollo 11 mission that launched on July 16, 1969. Four days later, on July 20, 1969, U.S. Astronaut Neil Armstrong made history by taking the first step on the moon while declaring, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind!”
July is the ultimate delicious month with all these food observances that are a month-long, too. In the U.S., there are at least three: National Watermelon Month, National Hot Dog Month, and National Ice Cream Month. Yum!
